The Farmers

Hello! We are Lily and Daniel Byrd, the farmers at Finch and Fern.

Our Story

Shortly before my husband and I got married in January of 2019, I began packing my belongings to move in with him. As I began packing, I quickly realized that I had become the crazy plant lady. I carefully tucked plant after plant into my cardboard boxes. Most of the plants were orchids, my first true love in the plant world. Once moved in and settled I was faced with the task of finding space for all of my plants so, I began unpacking a box and placing the plants around the house. They took over our space. Quickly. With a few boxes left to unpack, I decided to give my plant babies an entire room in our home. I created a nursery, in a sense, for them in a room filled with natural light. In conversation, with my husband, one day, I told him that it would be my dream to have a small greenhouse, he smiled and agreed that it would be useful. With spring just around the corner he asked me to help him grow his vegetable garden. With a delighted heart, I agreed. We soon found ourselves browsing through seed catalogues and in stores to search for what we had agreed to grow. Our weekends, as newlyweds, were spent at nurseries around our state. We loved taking day trips to nurseries and gardens in our surrounding area and coming home with new plants.

The love of growing plants had always been there for the two of us. Daniel had been fascinated with trees, shrubs, and plants in general, for as long as he could remember. In fact, he went on to complete his degree in turf and horticulture. For many years, previous to me moving in, he and his dad had grown a vegetable garden in their backyard. They often shared their large harvests with neighbors, friends, and family members. I had grown up surrounded by my mother’s cut flower gardens. I can remember how the seasons came and went with my mother’s cut flower arrangements that so often graced our family’s dinner table. Daffodils welcomed spring, lilies danced in the transition between spring and summer, and vases full of hydrangeas and sunflowers brought the warmth of the summer days indoors. Enamored with the idea of bringing joy into my new home with fresh cut flowers I decided that I would grow my own flowers in a small section of our veggie garden.

I immersed myself in the seed catalogues, again, and selected a few packets of Zinnias. According to the research I had done, Zinnias would be a good place to start. I had plenty of experience with growing indoor plants but growing outdoors was new to me. I wanted to start small to become comfortable with this new experience. I sowed my seeds, cared for the plants, and soon began seeing an abundance of blooms. Week after week and month after month my Zinnias bloomed which gave me the opportunity to create large, colorful arrangements to fill our home. I created what I like to call my signature “nightstand arrangement” which consists of colorful flowers, foraged greenery, and a touch of aromatic herbs such as basil, mint, and rosemary to give the arrangement a pleasing scent. Every morning during that summer, we woke up to a slice of paradise in our room. The scent of herbs filled the room and the cheerfully colored flowers made us smile. The whole experience was incredible and I knew I would be growing flowers for the rest of my life.

Once that first flower season was over I couldn’t stop thinking about flowers. I missed having them around our home. I began looking for flower inspiration online, to try to begin planning what I would grow for 2020, and came across a few flower farm Instagram accounts. I couldn’t believe it, I had never thought about where cut flowers came from! It was true, there were people out there who had flower farms, most of them grew and sold to their community only. There was and still is a local flower movement. Consumers are becoming more educated and more aware of where their products are coming from. I told my husband about the flower farms and I had seen and, knowing how passionate I was about growing cut flowers, he encouraged me to follow this new dream of owning my very own flower farm. Knowing that I could spread joy to others in my community with my flowers, I took the plunge. In 2020 Finch and Fern was established and I began selling my fresh cut flowers at a roadside stand. My local community shocked me. You guys stopped at my roadside stand and purchased my arrangements. You sold me out in under an hour on a few occasions and for that I will be eternally grateful. The demand that was created for my arrangements pushed me to make a decision to expand.

At the end of the 2020 growing season, the flower growing area was moved from our vegetable garden onto a larger piece of land on the property. Our current flowers are being grown on about 1/3 of an acre. With room to expand on the property, we hope to continue growing flowers for many years to come. I want to thank each and every person who has ever purchased a bouquet from me. Your support helped my dream come true, I am now a full time flower farmer.

Our Mission

Our mission at Finch and Fern is to provide our local community with fresh cut flowers that have been sustainably grown.

With an understanding of the responsibility we have to care for our native wildlife, we pledge to create a safe environment for our birds and bees to visit.

Why choose local?

Environmentally speaking, we are helping to lessen the carbon footprint of the floral industry.

Sadly, the cut flower bouquets normally found at grocery stores have usually been flown in from countries thousands of miles away. The Netherlands and Columbia are currently the largest exporters of cut flowers.

Have you ever asked yourself what kind of chemicals your flowers have been drenched in to help them survive on their journey around the world? Not only can those chemicals be harmful to our planet but we must also consider what kind of effects those chemicals are having on the health of the workers who are exposed to them daily.

Because we are a small farm, we are able to hand select each and every flower grown here to offer you the best variety. Have you ever noticed that every super market sells the exact same flowers year round? The reason is because those are the only flowers that ship well. Cut flower farms from other countries are unable to sell you many incredible types of flowers because they do not hold up to being out of water and in a refrigerator for days or even weeks before they reach your table.

Our flowers, here at Finch and Fern, have been chosen because they have an incredible vase life. Since we are local, we do not have to worry about storing flowers for long periods of time. The flowers you receive from us are fresh, meaning, they are harvested in the morning on the day of delivery. It is not unusual for our arrangements to last up to two weeks if cared for properly.
